Play for All Abilities Park: An Expansive Enclosed Park in Round Rock

Welcome to my second installment of posts highlighting awesome ENCLOSED play places in the Austin area.

As a mother of twins, and photographer of children with autism and other special needs, I know that a fenced in playground can sometimes be the only way to safely get the kids outside for play or for a photo session.  In light of this, my camera, family, and I are scouting the Austin area for fun and safe enclosed playgrounds.

This post features Play for All Abilities Park at 151 North A.W. Grimes Blvd. in Round Rock, TX.

This is a newer park, which opened in 2011 to serve children of all abilities.  And, wow...it has some incredible features!

The park boasts several areas (which they call pods) including:

  • Retreat Pod - a shaded area with giant "logs" and a multi-person swing
  • Sensory Wall and Sand Box - a larger-than-life sandbox with a sensory wall running the length of it (this feature does include a little water, so be prepared to get feet wet)
  • Rock Band Pod - a music area
  • Rolling Hill/Performance Lawn - a grassy area in front of the music area
  • Sensory Pod - water table, marble wall, and roller-tunnel
  • All Abilities Playscape - a colorful mostly-shaded playscape
  • All Ability Swings - a variety of swings, including a wheelchair swing
  • Round Rock Village life skills area - an area with small streets and shops where children can ride bikes and explore life-skills

Wet sand... such a temptation.

Fun to meet new friends on the merry-go-round!

Playscape is not too high and is mostly shaded.

The "shops" offer life-skill activities and the "streets" are great for practicing road safety.
 Other pros include:

  • Beautiful trees and picnic area
  • Low, seat-backed merry-go-round
  • High fence with double-gate entry
  • Clean restrooms and functioning water fountains
  • Animals are restricted to leashed service pets
  • Ample parking

All three of my kiddos had a blast at this park.  There really was something for everyone, and it was large enough to accommodate many families without feeling crowded.

The only con I noticed is that though it is fenced, it is quite large so you'll need to plan your child to adult ratio accordingly, especially if you have a wanderer.  With three children under 6, my husband and I were glad that we both went.

Hope you get a chance to enjoy this park soon!  Contact me if you'd like to schedule a photo-shoot at Play for All Abilities Park.
